Ezekiel 37:17Sefaria

A physical act often serves as a powerful mirror for a spiritual reality. The command to bring two separate pieces of wood together acts as a tangible symbol for healing a deep historical rift within the nation of Israel, bringing a message of hope and peace. These pieces of wood are not ordinary branches, but rather wooden tablets inscribed with the names of the tribes [רד״ק]. They represent a kingdom that was shattered by war and internal disputes By physically bringing them close, the prophet begins a process that reflects the ultimate national merger of a divided people.

The primary approach among commentators views this action as unfolding in two distinct stages: one natural and one miraculous. First, the prophet is instructed to hold the two wooden tablets close together so that, to anyone watching, they appear as a single object Once they are held together, a visible miracle takes place. God physically fuses the two separate tablets into one solid, unbroken piece of wood This miraculous merger serves as a clear sign to the Israelites that their future kingdom will once again be whole and at peace

On a deeper level, the fact that this complete union takes place directly in the prophet's hand points toward a future alliance between two distinct leaders: the Messiah from the line of David and the Messiah from the line of Joseph. Naturally, it is difficult to imagine two powerful kings sharing leadership without conflict. However, they will achieve absolute harmony because both leaders will act and govern entirely according to the prophet's guidance and the will of God [אהבת יהונתן].
