יחזקאל, פרק ל״ז, פסוק ד׳

Ezekiel 37:4Sefaria

A prophetic command is directed at silent, completely lifeless remains, demanding their return to existence. Typically, whether in the future resurrection of the dead or the formation of a child in the womb, the process of creation begins from a foundational point of life. It starts with a tiny essence or a small bone that still retains some moisture and vitality, upon which skin, flesh, sinews, and finally bones are gradually formed. However, this vision presents a completely different reality. The bones in question are entirely dry, having lost every trace of a basic life force. This complete dryness is a result of past wrongdoings, which stripped them of the proper preparation needed for resurrection. Consequently, a unique prophecy is required to first infuse them with the foundational spirit of life that they had lost [מלבי״ם].

Because the bones already exist, the sequence of their recreation is reversed from the natural order. Sinews will be added to the bones first, followed by flesh, and then skin. Only at the very end of this physical reconstruction will the higher, complete soul be breathed into them [מלבי״ם].

God's call for the dry bones to listen is a demand for them to understand His promise. They must recognize His word, which guarantees that He will breathe a new spirit into them so they can live once more [צאינה וראינה]. While this process contains deep spiritual layers, some commentators maintain that the command is straightforward and clear exactly as it is written, requiring no extensive explanation [רד״ק].
