Each of these entrances is dedicated to a specific tribe of Israel, with the western wall featuring gates named for Gad, Asher, and Naphtali.

While the dimensions and the number of gates are clearly established, the reasoning behind this specific arrangement remains a mystery. It is unknown why these particular three tribes were selected for the western boundary rather than another direction.
