Genesis 16:14Sefaria

A divine revelation in the heart of the desert transforms a simple water source into an enduring monument of faith and divine providence. Originally, the site was merely a natural spring flowing from the earth. Later, people dug around it to create a proper well, which was then named to commemorate the miraculous event [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that Hagar did not name the location herself. Instead, the title was established for future generations by an anonymous individual or by the regular travelers who passed through the area

The meaning behind the well's name inspires several different avenues of thought. One perspective suggests the title honors the angel who appeared to Hagar, recognizing the messenger as a living, eternal being Conversely, others believe the name refers directly to God Himself, the eternal, living Creator who constantly sees and watches over His creations On a deeper philosophical level, this location represents a merging of two profound realizations. Hagar recognized that God is present everywhere and actively watches over her, while Abraham contributed the understanding of God's eternal nature beyond time. Together, these insights formed the spiritual foundation for the monotheistic belief of the Arab nation that would eventually descend from Ishmael [רש ר הירש].

Other interpretations offer more personal and practical meanings. The concept of life in the name might reflect God's constant care, indicating that for as long as Hagar lives, God will watch over her [העמק דבר], or it may serve as a symbol of future success [הכתב והקבלה]. Alternatively, the name could allude to the merit of the righteous Abraham, since righteous individuals are spiritually referred to as living [פני דוד]. Another tradition views the name as a promise of return for the following year. According to this approach, the well evolved into an annual pilgrimage site for the Ishmaelites and is historically identified with the famous Zamzam well

The exact geographic placement of the well, noted as being in the southern region of Canaan [ביאור שטיינזלץ] and southwest of Beersheba [מחוקקי יהודה], serves both a physical and spiritual purpose. While one of the nearby boundaries is identified with the wilderness region of Shur [רד״ק, ביאור יש״ר], others consider it an entirely unknown location [שד״ל]. Spiritually, pinpointing the exact spot allowed travelers to see where the miracle occurred. This encouraged them to praise God, who sent an angel to save a simple maidservant out of His deep love for Abraham [רד״ק], and it eventually established the site as a permanent place of prayer [מלבי״ם].

Because this area lies outside the borders of the Land of Israel, a theological question arises. Tradition maintains that divine prophecy does not typically manifest outside the land. Therefore, Hagar was only able to merit this revelation in the desert because she had already experienced the Divine Presence while living inside the Land of Israel, within Abraham's household Alternatively, the very fact that she was outside the land made her realize that she was not experiencing true prophecy, but rather a direct encounter with an angel of providence [חתם סופר]. Years later, this well continued to serve as a significant landmark in the family's history. It was from this exact spot that Isaac eventually returned to bring Hagar back into the family, after she had settled there and returned to God in repentance [ברכת אשר].
