Genesis 16:16Sefaria

וְאַבְרָ֕ם בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְשֵׁ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֑ים בְּלֶֽדֶת־הָגָ֥ר אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל לְאַבְרָֽם׃ {ס}

Establishing the exact timeline of Abram's life provides an important chronological anchor, helping to organize a biblical narrative that does not always unfold in strict sequential order [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Eleven years after leaving Haran at the age of seventy-five, Abram's age is recorded again. Marking his age at eighty-six highlights a rapid chain of events. Sarai gave Hagar to Abram at the end of their tenth year in Canaan, and by the very beginning of his eighty-sixth year, Hagar had already conceived and given birth. She became pregnant without any delay in order to quickly bring Abram the joy of a son [רד״ק]. This specific timeline also reveals that Abram had never approached Hagar previously, doing so only because he listened to the voice of his wife [מלבי״ם].

From another perspective, noting Abram's advanced age underscores a profound divine miracle. Although he could not father children in his youth, God completely renewed his vitality. He granted him the strength to have a child at eighty-six, a lasting physical renewal that enabled him to father Isaac at the age of one hundred, as well as several more children later in life [ביאור יש״ר].

The primary approach among commentators is that establishing this timeline actually looks toward the future, ultimately serving to praise Ishmael. Through simple calculation, it becomes clear that when Abram is circumcised at the age of ninety-nine, Ishmael is thirteen. At thirteen, a young man is mature enough to make his own decisions, yet he does not resist the procedure [רש״י]. While the narrative later explicitly states Ishmael's age at the time of his circumcision, commentators explain that this earlier mathematical groundwork is essential. Without it, one might assume Abram forced the procedure upon his son against his will. Since Ishmael's age can already be deduced from the earlier events, the later mention of his age is not just a repetition of facts. Instead, it serves to express wonder and praise, testifying that Ishmael fulfilled God's Commandment entirely of his own free will as a mature individual, rather than out of fear or coercion from his father [ריב״א, שפתי חכמים, יריעות שלמה, גור אריה, משכיל לדוד, ברכת אשר על התורה].
