Faced with the demands of the nation, Rehoboam makes a fateful decision to assert his dominance. He chooses a strict, unyielding approach and completely rejects the path of reconciliation. When he finally addresses the people, he speaks to them with harsh and severe words. By responding in this manner, the king completely abandons the guidance of his older advisors. These elders had originally tried to steer him toward compromise, urging him to appease the people. Instead, Rehoboam ignores their recommendation entirely.
