II Chronicles 10:1Sefaria

The transition of power following the death of King Solomon requires his son and heir, Rehoboam, to leave his capital city and travel to conduct a public coronation ceremony before the nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This historical account is also recorded in parallel within the Book of Kings [מלבי״ם].

The gathering takes place in the city of Shechem, a choice that is far from accidental. The location is driven by a mix of political strategy, geographic significance, and deep spiritual history. Politically, the people deliberately avoid traveling to Jerusalem. They calculate that if the coronation occurs in Rehoboam's own stronghold, he will feel too secure and powerful, making him likely to reject their upcoming demands [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, Shechem sits within the territory of the tribe of Ephraim. This is the home region of Jeroboam, the very figure destined to lead a rebellion against the crown [רש״י].

Beyond immediate politics, the city carries a dark historical weight. It is recognized as a place historically prone to tragedy. According to tradition, Shechem is the exact location where Dinah was violated and where Joseph was sold. Now, it serves as the stage for another disaster: the tragic splitting of the kingdom [חומת אנך]. Ultimately, the journey to Shechem and the gathering of the people there is an event orchestrated by God. It serves as the divine mechanism to set these historical events in motion, fulfilling His decree to tear the kingdom away from the royal house of David [רש״י].
