Representatives of the Israelites send for Jeroboam, asking him to join them in their meeting with Rehoboam [מצודת דוד]. Their intention is for Jeroboam to serve as their unofficial spokesman during these talks [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. United, the people and their chosen leader approach the king to present a clear, specific claim regarding the political arrangements of the kingdom [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beneath the surface of these political maneuverings lies a deliberate act of Divine providence. Jeroboam initially arrives with the intention of participating in the coronation of Rehoboam, yet his presence reveals a deeper plan. God orchestrates the unfolding events to completely overturn the expected outcome, ensuring that it is Jeroboam himself who will ultimately take the throne [רש"י].
