II Chronicles 10:15Sefaria

A fateful governmental decision that appears to be a senseless political blunder is sometimes revealed to be a carefully orchestrated divine plan. King Rehoboam was faced with a public plea to ease the heavy tax burden placed upon the nation, yet he flatly refused the request [מצודת דוד]. From a logical standpoint, the king should have recognized the growing public resentment. Since the massive building projects initiated by his father, Solomon, had already been completed, the taxes could have been safely reduced without causing immediate harm. However, Rehoboam remained completely blind to the reality of the situation [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This sheer lack of awareness was not merely a failure of political wisdom or simple foolishness in choosing the advice of inexperienced young men over wise elders. The primary approach among commentators is that Rehoboam’s blindness was the direct result of divine intervention, an unavoidable decree and a sequence of events actively set into motion by God God orchestrated this political misstep to fulfill a specific prophecy delivered by Ahijah the Shilonite. Because idolatry had crept into the kingdom during Solomon’s reign, God decreed that the nation would be divided, tearing ten tribes away from the House of David and placing them under the rule of Jeroboam

This historical turning point carries a profound connection to the ancient blessing Jacob gave to Judah, which declared that the royal scepter would not depart from his descendants until they arrived at Shiloh. Rehoboam traveled to Shechem to be crowned, a city located very close to Shiloh. This area was a natural and respected public gathering place because the Tabernacle had once stood there. It was precisely in this region, gathered around Shiloh, that the ancient words came to life. The scepter departed from Judah as the kingdom was torn in two, and the House of David permanently lost its rule over the ten tribes [רש״י].
