Recognizing this unstable reality, the older, experienced leaders offer practical political advice, emphasizing that a temporary concession is the ultimate key to securing long-term loyalty and a stable reign.

The elders advise the king to adopt a gentle and kind approach. They suggest that, for this critical moment, he must be willing to act almost as a servant to the people, setting aside his royal pride to fulfill their immediate desires [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. This strategy requires him to actively appease the public, speaking softly and offering pleasant words to soothe their frustrations. Furthermore, granting their request to lighten their heavy burdens is a financially realistic move; the new king's royal expenses are significantly lower than those of his father, Solomon, making a reduction in their daily burden entirely manageable [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
