II Chronicles 10:8Sefaria

A leader's choice of advisors often comes down to a battle between wisdom and personal pride. The decision to reject the guidance of older, experienced counselors and turn instead to advisors of the same age is driven entirely by a desire to protect personal honor. The advice given by the elders is dismissed simply because it does not seem right to the king. In his view, following their counsel would diminish his status and is completely unfitting for his royal dignity.

Driven by this need to maintain his pride, he seeks guidance from a younger group of people who are completely lacking in both political background and practical experience. Instead of seasoned statesmen, his inner circle is made up of friends who grew up with him since childhood. Because they share his background and currently serve as his close companions, they offer a comfortable environment for a leader more concerned with his own prestige than with sound, experienced leadership.
