Securing control over the southern port city of Eilat was a major strategic victory that ended a long historical struggle [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The effort to claim this territory had deep roots. King Solomon originally conquered the city from Edom, but the Edomites eventually returned and took it back. Generations later, King Amaziah fought Edom and successfully recaptured the city. However, during his lifetime, the city remained open and unfortified.

Because a city without walls cannot offer true security, Amaziah's initial military victory did not completely restore the area to the Kingdom of Judah. It was only after Amaziah died that his son, Uzziah, was able to finish the task [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. Uzziah actively built up the city walls, transforming the location into a secure fortress. By fortifying the area, he established a stable and permanent hold on the port, effectively returning it to the full control of Judah [מצודת דוד].
