A deep fear settled over the surrounding nations as they witnessed his rise. Recognizing his overwhelming power, the Ammonites brought gifts of tribute as a clear declaration of their submission and loyalty. The fact that they surrendered willingly, without a single battle being fought, highlights the sheer magnitude of the king's strength [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Regarding their identity, some suggest that these tributaries were actually the Meunites who were involved in earlier events [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].
