II Chronicles 26:18Sefaria

The boundaries of holy service are strict and unyielding, even for a king. When King Uzziah attempts to step beyond his royal duties, the priests confront him directly to clarify these limits. They emphasize that his actions are strictly forbidden [מצודת דוד], and that he is trespassing into a sacred space that does not belong to him [מלבי״ם]. The right to offer incense is an exclusive duty reserved solely for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been specifically set apart and made holy for this exact purpose [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Because of this severe breach, the priests demand that the king immediately leave the Sanctuary, as his actions are considered a direct sin [מצודת דוד]. The restriction against entering this holy space applies to anyone who is not a priest. Stepping inside without a legitimate need is not just a boundary violation, but an actual desecration of what is holy [מלבי״ם].

The confrontation concludes with a stark warning about the king's underlying motives and the ultimate result of his actions. Uzziah believed that offering the incense would earn him honor from God, but the priests firmly correct this misunderstanding. While performing the priestly service certainly brings honor to those who are worthy and specifically chosen for it, anyone who is unworthy and tries to seize this role by force will experience the exact opposite. Instead of glory, the king's forceful attempt to claim the priesthood will only result in punishment, disgrace, and deep shame
