The end of King Uzziah reflects the tragedy of his final years. Even in death, his illness dictated how he was treated and where he would finally rest, creating a permanent separation between him and the other kings of the House of David.
The primary approach among commentators is that Uzziah was not buried inside the royal burial cave itself. Instead, he was laid to rest in a plot or field adjacent to the graves of his ancestors. This physical distancing was a direct result of his leprosy. Because he had contracted the disease, it was determined that it was inappropriate to bury him together with the other kings inside the main cave. As a result, he was allocated a separate, though nearby, burial place.
