During this era, the king made it his constant practice to seek closeness to God, taking advantage of a time uniquely suited for spiritual growth.

Central to this spiritual awakening was a figure named Zechariah. Commentators offer varying perspectives on his identity. Some suggest that Zechariah was actually another name for the king himself, who was known by three different titles [רש״י, חומת אנך]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that Zechariah was a distinct individual. He is understood to have been a righteous prophet or a wise mentor who directed the king along his spiritual journey [רד״ק, רלב״ג, שטיינזלץ].
