וַיַּעֲל֤וּ אֶת־הָאָרוֹן֙ וְאֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וְאֶת־כׇּל־כְּלֵ֥י הַקֹּ֖דֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּאֹ֑הֶל הֶעֱל֣וּ אֹתָ֔ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים הַלְוִיִּֽם׃

The shift from a temporary, wandering sanctuary to a permanent Temple in Jerusalem required gathering all the sacred items into the new building constructed by Solomon. This moment brings together the nation's past, represented by the original Tabernacle and its vessels, and its future in a grand stone structure. The sacred items were brought from different locations and served different purposes. The Ark was brought up from Zion, the City of David, and carried into its permanent resting place in the Holy of Holies [רד״ק].

In contrast, the Tent of Meeting was brought from Gibeon. This tent was the original Tabernacle that Moses crafted in the desert. Because Solomon had built a permanent Temple, the portable structure was no longer needed. Therefore, its parts were carefully taken apart and stored away within the treasuries of the House of God [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Along with the tent, the holy vessels that David had prepared for the Ark were also placed into storage [רש״י, רד״ק].

The task of moving these sacred items involved specific roles. The primary approach among commentators is that there was a clear division of labor between the priests and the Levites [רלב״ג]. The priests were given the responsibility of carrying the Ark, while the Levites transported the Tent of Meeting and the other vessels, following their traditional duties [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. At the same time, it is noted that the priests themselves can be referred to as Levites, since they belong to the tribe of Levi. This understanding aligns with the account in the Book of Kings, which explicitly states that it was the priests who carried the Ark [רש״י].
