I Chronicles 26:15Sefaria

לְעֹבֵ֥ד אֱדֹ֖ם נֶ֑גְבָּה וּלְבָנָ֖יו בֵּ֥ית הָאֲסֻפִּֽים׃

Assigning guard duties for the Temple was handled by drawing lots, ensuring a fair distribution of posts among the various families of gatekeepers. Through this process, the family of Obed-edom was assigned to protect the southern side of the complex [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Within this southern sector, a specific responsibility fell to his descendants to guard a structure known as the House of Gatherings [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This building stood just south of the main Temple courtyard, positioned outside the primary enclosure and directly facing the southern gate [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. While the exact purpose of this structure is not entirely clear, it likely served as a storehouse or a meeting place [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or perhaps it was named for a specific, well-known function of that era [מצודת דוד].

The assignment was further divided within the family itself. While Obed-edom took charge of the general southern watch, the specific duty of guarding the House of Gatherings was given to his grandsons, the sons of Shemaiah. Operating as independent heads of their own households, they stationed four guards at this location [מלבי״ם]. This arrangement was part of a much larger, carefully balanced security network consisting of twenty-four guard stations surrounding the Temple. The layout was highly organized, featuring six guards on the east mirroring six on the west, and four on the north matching four on the south. Additional guards were stationed in outer areas, such as the gates used for clearing ashes [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

At first glance, the records seem to indicate that all twenty-four of these security posts were manned exclusively by Levites. However, rabbinic tradition clarifies that three of these stations were actually guarded by Priests. This is consistent with biblical phrasing, as Priests are occasionally referred to as Levites due to their shared tribal ancestry [רד״ק].
