I Chronicles 26:20Sefaria

וְֽהַלְוִיִּ֑ם אֲחִיָּ֗ה עַל־אֽוֹצְרוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וּלְאֹצְר֖וֹת הַקֳּדָשִֽׁים׃ {ס}

The daily operations of the Temple required more than just ritual worship and musical praise; they demanded strict economic and logistical management. The vast wealth and property dedicated to the sanctuary had to be carefully overseen, and these administrative duties were entrusted to the Levite tribe. Emphasizing their involvement highlights that safeguarding the national treasures was an official, vital part of their tribal responsibilities [מצודת דוד].

The primary approach among commentators is that the individuals assigned to these financial roles were Levites who did not serve as singers or gatekeepers, but were instead dedicated to guarding the storehouses and performing the labor necessary for the Temple's ongoing operation [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, another perspective suggests that these roles were filled by the gatekeepers themselves, with select individuals receiving an additional appointment to manage the treasuries [מלבי״ם].

At the head of this financial system stood Ahijah, the chief administrator overseeing both the personnel and the wealth of the sanctuary. His authority was divided into two distinct economic domains. The first domain consisted of the general treasures of the house of God. These were the stored funds and assets specifically designated for the physical maintenance and structural repair of the building [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג].

The second domain involved the dedicated holy treasures. These funds were primarily used to purchase the public sacrifices [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. Additionally, these holy treasuries safeguarded sacred objects, spoils of war, and significant wealth dedicated by generations of national leaders, including King David, Samuel the Prophet, Saul, Abner, and Joab [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. While Ahijah held the ultimate authority over the entire system, additional officials operated under his leadership, with specific individuals appointed to manage each distinct type of treasury [רלב״ג].
