Our world is filled with sudden reversals where the natural balance of power completely flips. Physical strength and military might offer no guarantee of victory, as true control over human destiny rests exclusively in the hands of God, who alters reality according to His will. A sharp contrast emerges when the weapons of the mighty are shattered, leaving the warriors themselves completely broken [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At the exact same time, those who are weak and stumbling suddenly find themselves wrapped in immense power, as if they have secured a heavy belt of strength around themselves [מצודת ציון, רד״ק]. While some explain that this destruction applies broadly to the collective weapons of entire armies [מלבי״ם], others suggest that the breaking is not limited to the physical weapons at all. Instead, the warriors and their weapons are shattered together as one [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
The primary approach among commentators is that this dynamic reflects God's active providence. He repays individuals according to their actions, actively weakening the strong and strengthening the frail [רש״י, מצודת דוד]. These dramatic shifts are not the result of random chance. Rather, they represent a fundamental rule of the world, demonstrating that all honor, authority, and power are entirely managed by the Creator [אברבנאל]. The mighty experience sudden downfall precisely because they place their trust in their own physical strength and weaponry. In contrast, the weak, who recognize their own limitations and humbly submit to God, receive His direct help and achieve unexpected victory, much like the historic defeat of Sennacherib [רלב״ג, אלשיך].
This reality creates a deep difference in perspective among people. The strong and wealthy naturally tend to attribute their success to their own personal abilities, making it difficult for them to recognize Divine intervention. The weak, however, can easily identify God's hand guiding the events of their lives [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this dynamic highlights the ultimate triumph of Divine providence over the fixed laws of nature and astrology. God shatters those who were destined by nature to be powerful, and He grants strength to those whose fate was to be weak. Through this, He proves His absolute and overriding control over the entire order of creation [אהבת יהונתן].
