I Samuel 2:35Sefaria

A profound historical turning point in the spiritual leadership of Israel unfolds as God promises to transfer the High Priesthood from a failing family to a new, worthy dynasty. This new line of priests is destined to work in perfect harmony with the royal monarchy. Commentators widely agree that the priest chosen for this role is Zadok. The nature of his appointment carries a dual, complementary meaning: he is a person deeply loyal to God, and his position will be permanent, enduring, and stable [מצודת ציון]. The practical transition of power occurred when the curse over Eli's descendants was lifted and Abiathar was removed from his position. Zadok first took on the duties of the High Priest during King David's flight from Absalom, and he was officially anointed to the role during the reign of King Solomon

The nature of this new priest's service is defined by his complete alignment with God's desires. He will act exactly according to the will of God, following the Torah and the Commandments Yet, his dedication goes far beyond basic, technical obedience. His service is not merely about the external performance of duties; it is deeply connected to a pure, inner divine intention. The physical performance of a Commandment is compared to a material body, while the inner intention to sanctify God's name serves as its living soul [מלבי״ם].

As a reward for this profound loyalty, God promises to build an enduring house for this priest, granting him and his descendants a permanent and stable dynasty. Fulfilling this promise, Zadok's descendants served continuously as High Priests across many generations, maintaining their sacred role all the way until the era of Ezra

This new priestly dynasty is also defined by its unique relationship with the monarchy. The priest will maintain a close, constant presence with the King of Israel [רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ], a dynamic that involves spending time together and sharing a deep personal closeness [מצודת ציון]. The High Priest and his descendants will hold a special, honored status within the royal court. The priest is the one who approaches the king to offer counsel, guide him on the proper path, and engage in conversation, fostering a bond of peace and intimacy. In contrast, the king approaches the priest only when he needs to seek divine guidance through the judgment of the Urim and Thummim
