The sanctuary at Shiloh was meant to be a place of reverence and devotion, but its leadership transformed it into a site of deep corruption and blatant abuse. Instead of accepting the specific, allotted portions granted to the priests by Torah law, the sons of Eli instituted a violent and arbitrary system to rob the arriving pilgrims.

This exploitation took the form of sheer aggression. A priest would forcefully plunge an iron fork into the boiling meat, aiming to stab and pull up the largest pieces possible [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. This violent thrust was directed into whatever cooking vessel was being used. While commentators note that the various vessels represent different types of pots and pans [רש״י], they also point out that the choice of cookware reflected the size of the sacrifice. A massive ox would boil in a large cauldron, a smaller animal in a medium pot, and a young kid in a small pan [מלבי״ם].

Yet, the priests made no distinction between the type of pot or the size of the offering. They wielded the same massive fork and struck with equal force even into the smallest pans, ensuring they extracted huge chunks of meat without any regard for the owner [מלבי״ם]. Whatever meat came up on the prongs at once [רד״ק], the priest simply claimed as his own [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. This behavior stood in absolute defiance of Torah law, which dictates exactly which parts of the animal belong to the priests, replacing divine instruction with unbridled greed [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The cruelty of this practice was magnified by its universal application. The priests acted with the exact same callousness toward every Israelite who came to offer a sacrifice [מצודת דוד]. They showed no consideration, ignoring whether the pilgrim was wealthy or poor, or whether a large family was depending on that meat for their meal [מלבי״ם]. The people who journeyed to Shiloh arrived with deep respect for the priesthood, only to find themselves completely helpless, unable to resist or challenge the violent theft carried out by a corrupt establishment [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
