I Samuel 2:18Sefaria

Amidst the corruption of the established religious leadership, a striking contrast emerges through the figure of a young boy dedicating his life to God. While the adult priests, the sons of Eli, degrade the holy service and chase after worldly pleasures, Samuel remains entirely unaffected. Even as a young Levite growing up in their immediate surroundings, he protects his purity and refuses to adopt their wicked ways

As he matures, his spiritual independence blossoms. In his earlier days, he required Eli's guidance and served under his direction. Now, he stands on his own, directing his heart straight to heaven and serving God directly This dedicated service takes the form of deep Torah study, developing a personal knowledge of God, and mastering the traditional Levite duties of song and instrumental music [רד״ק].

Despite his youth, he conducts himself with profound holiness and dresses in the manner of God's most distinguished servants [מצודת דוד]. He wears a simple linen ephod [מצודת ציון]. Commentators offer different pictures of this garment. It is seen by some as a type of coat [רש״י], while others describe it as an apron that covers the lower body and reaches down to the feet [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective suggests it closely resembles the sacred ephod worn by the High Priest

Regardless of its exact shape, this linen garment is not strictly reserved for priests. Rather, it is worn by anyone, whether Priest, Levite, or ordinary Israelite like King David later on, who completely separates themselves for divine service, marking them as distinct from the rest of society

Samuel's choice of clothing powerfully amplifies the divide between him and Eli's sons. While the actual priests disgrace their inherited roles, Samuel the Levite dresses and serves in the sanctuary with the same reverence as a true priest [אברבנאל]. Furthermore, his satisfaction with a plain linen garment reveals a complete lack of desire for luxury or expensive clothing, beautifully reflecting the modest and wholesome upbringing he received from his mother [אלשיך].
