ישעיהו, פרק ל״ה, פסוק ג׳

Isaiah 35:3Sefaria

חַזְּק֖וּ יָדַ֣יִם רָפ֑וֹת וּבִרְכַּ֥יִם כֹּשְׁל֖וֹת אַמֵּֽצוּ׃

Prolonged hardship can drain a community of its spirit, leaving people physically exhausted and spiritually broken. In times of deep despair, there is a profound need for words of hope and active support to revive those who have lost their faith. The primary responsibility to deliver this comfort and announce the coming redemption falls upon the prophets and messengers of salvation [רש״י, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. However, others suggest this duty belongs to anyone who has managed to keep their faith strong during the bitter years of exile. These resilient individuals are called upon to actively uplift their more vulnerable brothers [רד״ק, שד״ל]. The instruction is strictly an active one, requiring people to step outside themselves and grant strength to others rather than simply trying to fortify their own resolve [רש״י].

Most commentators view this message as a source of comfort looking forward to a future redemption. Yet, there is an opinion that these words were originally directed at the people returning to Jerusalem during the reign of Hezekiah, following the dramatic downfall of the Assyrian king [אבן עזרא]. The call addresses different forms of human frailty. While some understand the descriptions of physical weakness as merely a poetic repetition of the same idea [מצודת דוד], others see a precise diagnosis of the people's suffering. Limp hands represent an internal, spiritual collapse. This occurs when a person gives in to despair, abandons the service of God, and completely stops taking action [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. Such individuals need a standard level of encouragement to help them resume their duties.

In contrast, stumbling knees represent severe physical exhaustion. This condition stems from enduring a long, difficult journey [אבן עזרא], or from the crushing weight of endless troubles and hard labor, rather than from laziness or a lack of willpower [מלבי״ם]. Because this external weakness is so deep, it requires a much more intense response, demanding a steady, permanent, and unchanging infusion of strength [מלבי״ם]. Beyond emotional and spiritual encouragement, this message also serves as a practical call for social responsibility. Supporting those who are failing involves providing direct financial assistance to the destitute. Fulfilling this duty of charity is seen as a powerful act that saves lives and directly brings the final redemption closer [חומת אנך].
