וְהָיָ֤ה הַשָּׁרָב֙ לַאֲגַ֔ם וְצִמָּא֖וֹן לְמַבּ֣וּעֵי מָ֑יִם בִּנְוֵ֤ה תַנִּים֙ רִבְצָ֔הּ חָצִ֖יר לְקָנֶ֥ה וָגֹֽמֶא׃

A dramatic vision of nature undergoing an extreme reversal portrays a barren, desolate desert transforming into a lush oasis overflowing with water and life. This miraculous shift in the natural world serves as a powerful metaphor for the redemption of Israel and their return from exile. God will smooth the journey, providing His people with everything they need to return to their land in peace [שד״ל]. It also stands as a symbol that those thirsting for salvation will be rescued, and the lowly will be raised to greatness [רש״י, מצודת דוד].

The transformation begins with the most severe desert conditions. The primary approach among commentators is that a region completely dried out by intense heat and a beating sun will turn into a gathering pool of water [אבן עזרא, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. A unique perspective suggests a different phenomenon, noting that the original description relates to an optical illusion, or mirage, common in hot deserts [שד״ל]. Thirsty travelers often see what appears to be water in the distance, only to approach and find dry sand. According to this view, God will take this cruel, deceptive illusion and turn it into a genuine pool of water. Furthermore, areas of absolute, complete drought will suddenly burst with springs erupting directly from the earth [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. These waters will spring forth specifically for those returning from exile, meant to quench their thirst as they walk along the journey home [רד״ק].

Beyond the sudden appearance of water, the surrounding plant and animal life will undergo a complete reversal. Desolate wastelands that once served as the lairs and resting places for dangerous creatures like snakes and crocodiles [רש״י, מצודת ציון], or jackals and wild beasts [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ], will be entirely renewed. While some view these resting places as the specific dens of the female wild beasts [רד״ק], others argue that these dangerous lairs will be replaced entirely by ideal, peaceful resting places for grazing flocks and herds [שד״ל].

This renewal extends to the vegetation as well. Whether the landscape originally consisted of dry grass that typically survives in waterless environments [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ], or simply barren, empty courtyards [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, שד״ל], the outcome is the same. These arid spaces will sprout thick reeds and rushes. Because these specific plants cannot grow without an environment completely saturated with water and swamps, their presence proves the sheer abundance of the new water supply. Through these vivid images, the prophet illustrates how the driest, harshest reality will ultimately be replaced with profound abundance, life, and salvation.
