זִכְרוּ־זֹ֖את וְהִתְאֹשָׁ֑שׁוּ הָשִׁ֥יבוּ פוֹשְׁעִ֖ים עַל־לֵֽב׃

A piercing call is issued to the people, urging them to shake off their spiritual slumber and recognize the sheer foolishness of worshiping idols. Addressed directly to those who have lost their way, it is a demand that they reclaim their reason and return to the right path. They are urged to focus their memory, which requires reflecting either on the emptiness and disgrace of the idols just described [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד], or on the message that is about to be delivered [רש״י]. On a deeper spiritual level, this memory represents the act of studying Torah with an intense, burning desire [חומת אנך].

The prophet demands a profound personal transformation, which commentators understand in three distinct ways. The first approach views this as a demand to act like rational human beings. Instead of behaving like mindless animals, the people must actively use their intellect [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, שד״ל]. A second perspective sees this as a call for inner strength, urging the people to build firm, unshakable foundations of understanding within their hearts [רש״י, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The third approach connects this transformation to the concept of fire. Within this view, some explain that the people should feel a burning shame over their destructive actions [רב האי גאון מובא ברד״ק ובאבן עזרא]. Others interpret the fire positively, suggesting the heart itself should awaken and burn with passion [רב סעדיה גאון מובא באבן עזרא], or that the people must fill themselves entirely with spirituality and the warmth of the Torah [חומת אנך].

The message is ultimately directed at the rebels, a title reserved exclusively for the sinners among the Israelites, as the prophets do not use this term for idolaters from other nations [שד״ל]. They are instructed to reflect deeply and take these matters to heart. Even a brief moment of honest reflection is enough for them to realize the foolishness of their current path [מלבי״ם]. Beyond personal reflection, this also serves as a social and spiritual directive. It is an instruction to gently guide those who have strayed back to God, using pleasant words and drawing their hearts close in a spirit of true connection [חומת אנך].
