Isaiah 59:4Sefaria

A society utterly stripped of truth is doomed to live a reality of deception, affecting everything from everyday friendships to the justice system, and even the relationship between humanity and God. This deep-seated hollowness infects not only actions but the very thoughts and plans of the people, ultimately creating a destructive reality where social and legal integrity completely collapses.

The primary approach among commentators is that society has reached a point where people no longer honestly correct or guide one another This breakdown is also glaringly obvious in the legal sphere, where people's claims and lawsuits against each other are built entirely on lies and deceit From a spiritual perspective, this absence of truth means there is no one left who prays to God with genuine sincerity and a pure heart

The corruption easily breaches the walls of the courtroom and poisons public debate. Inside the courts, the judges themselves actively distort justice Even when looking past the judges, the litigants—both plaintiffs and defendants—argue with a complete lack of honesty, mutually deceiving one another Taking this into the realm of faith, the failure of honest debate means there is no one willing to faithfully stand up and argue against those who deny God [מלבי״ם].

This widespread dysfunction stems from a reliance on things that have absolutely no substance People lean heavily on false assurances, freely making promises they have no intention of keeping A person might lie to a friend, feeling completely confident that the deception will remain hidden. Yet, this is a foolish and empty trust, as all actions are clearly visible to God and will eventually be exposed [רד״ק]. The criticism here is directed not merely at the sin of lying, but at the sheer uselessness and emptiness of such words [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On an ideological level, this reliance on emptiness describes heretics who build their arguments on completely false and baseless assumptions [מלבי״ם].

The entire process of creating sin is ultimately compared to the cycle of reproduction. The primary approach among commentators is that careful thought and planning are likened to pregnancy, while the resulting wicked speech or action is likened to giving birth. This imagery highlights that committing evil is rarely a matter of accidental opportunity; rather, it is the deliberate product of premeditated, malicious planning [מצודת דוד]. Conceptually, the period of pregnancy symbolizes the adoption of misleading foundational assumptions, while the birth represents the inevitable false conclusion that denies the very reality of God [מלבי״ם].
