כִּֽי־רַבּ֤וּ פְשָׁעֵ֙ינוּ֙ נֶגְדֶּ֔ךָ וְחַטֹּאותֵ֖ינוּ עָ֣נְתָה בָּ֑נוּ כִּֽי־פְשָׁעֵ֣ינוּ אִתָּ֔נוּ וַעֲוֺנֹתֵ֖ינוּ יְדַעֲנֽוּם׃

A profound, collective confession emerges from the prophet, who speaks on behalf of the Israelites to admit their wrongdoings before God [אבן עזרא]. This recognition does not stem from an external rebuke, but from a deep internal awakening where the wrongful actions themselves serve as witnesses against the people [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The sheer volume of these offenses is immense [מצודת דוד]. Yet, the burden they carry is not limited to their present actions. The prolonged state of exile is the direct result of an accumulation of the ancestors' transgressions combined with those of the current generation [רד״ק]. In the past, earlier generations mistakenly believed that God did not see their actions. Now, from the depths of exile, the people openly confess, acknowledging that their wrongdoings are fully exposed and placed directly before His eyes [רד״ק, שד״ל].

The offenses fall into distinct categories. Some are direct acts of rebellion against God, while others are offenses committed against fellow humans, such as robbery and oppression [מלבי״ם]. These actions do not just sit idle; they actively testify against the nation [מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא]. The nature of this testimony is severe, as the offenses do not simply merge into a general blur of guilt. Instead, each individual wrong stands up on its own to testify, accuse, and bring hardship upon the people [רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

A stubborn persistence accompanies these misdeeds. The wrongdoings remain firmly attached to the people because they have not yet repented or abandoned their destructive paths [מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The confession emphasizes that the people are fully aware of their history, acknowledging that these actions were committed intentionally and not by mistake [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, שד״ל]. Adding another layer to this tragedy, the transgressions also encompass heresy and deep intellectual errors. The true misfortune is that the nation continues to cling to these false beliefs, fully recognizing them yet refusing to let them go [מלבי״ם].
