Isaiah 59:6Sefaria

People often invest immense effort into building lives and systems that ultimately offer no real security. The tragic reality of those who pursue evil is that their life's work amounts to nothing more than spinning spider webs. These webs, spun and attached to walls [מצודת ציון], perfectly illustrate the futility and destructive nature of their behavior. The primary approach among commentators is that just as fragile spider webs can never be woven into a durable garment, the actions of the wicked lack any permanence, stability, or true value. Instead of creating a protective layer, their endless labor produces nothing good [שד״ל]. In fact, it only serves to build a harmful trap [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. When inevitable trouble arrives, the fragile structures they have built will offer absolutely no shelter or defense for themselves or for anyone else [רד״ק, שד״ל].

On a deeper conceptual level, this imagery reflects the flawed logic of their choices. The false assumptions and imaginary proofs they rely on can never be assembled into a solid, logical foundation. Furthermore, they cannot use these flimsy excuses as a blindfold to claim they simply made an innocent mistake [מלבי״ם].

The failure of their path is evident both in the useless results they produce and in the sheer wickedness of the processes themselves [שד״ל, מלבי״ם]. Their deeds are entirely devoid of substance, representing a complete misuse of power [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

One might hope that, despite their flaws, these individuals maintain some basic standard of morality in how they treat others. However, their entire existence is rooted in injustice, and their daily routine is consumed by robbery and extortion [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, whatever wealth and capital they desperately clutch in their hands are not signs of true success, but merely the stolen fruits of their own violence [שד״ל].
