ישעיהו, פרק ס״ד, פסוק ח׳

Isaiah 64:8Sefaria

A desperate plea for divine forgiveness often relies on an unbreakable bond. When facing severe anger over national sins, the ultimate defense is the enduring relationship between God and His people. The prophet begs God to calm His wrath, addressing both its intensity and its duration. Because God has already poured out a great deal of anger upon the nation [אבן עזרא], the plea takes on a dual nature. The primary approach among commentators is that the request is twofold: first, that God's anger should not be overwhelmingly intense, and second, that it should not become a permanent, ongoing state [מלבי״ם] and [מצודת דוד]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that both parts of the plea focus entirely on the hope that His anger will simply not last forever [שד״ל].

To justify this call for mercy, the prophet asks God to look closely at the nation's true condition and core essence. Despite the deep flaws and sins that have attached themselves to the people, they ultimately remain God's nation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Going even further, the people declare that their inner spirit has stayed completely loyal. Every person still believes in God and hopes for Him, with no one truly turning away in their heart [מצודת דוד] and [מלבי״ם]. Because of this inner loyalty, their spiritual decline is not entirely their own fault; rather, it is the result of external pressures and circumstances that led them astray [מלבי״ם]. Therefore, the ultimate request is for God to look past the surface and see that right now, at this very moment, they still stand before Him as His devoted people [אבן עזרא].
