God determines a specific destiny for the people, assigning them a share similar to how portions are divided by the casting of lots [מצודת ציון]. However, there is a careful distinction in how this outcome is delivered. While a lot might sometimes grant a person a share larger than they strictly deserve, their designated portion is an exact, calculated amount [מלבי״ם]. The primary approach among commentators is that this precise calculation represents the principle of measure for measure. God gives the nation the exact consequence that matches their traits and actions.

The people brought this destiny upon themselves by forgetting God and choosing instead to trust in false promises, such as relying on the help of Egypt [מצודת דוד]. Because they made this choice, God's response aligns perfectly with their behavior. Just as the people forgot Him, He will forget them [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Just as they turned their backs on Him, He will hide His face from them, leaving them exposed to numerous troubles and hardships [רד״ק].
