The absolute and severe destruction of the nation is compared to clay jugs filled with drunkenness that crash into one another and shatter into tiny fragments. God declares a total annihilation devoid of any mercy, one that will completely dismantle society and sever the closest family ties. This devastation is characterized by a violent crushing and smashing into fine pieces [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם].

There are two primary ways commentators understand how this shattering will occur among the people. One approach views it as a cycle of mutual harm, where the people will strike and break one another until they are completely scattered, much like fragile vessels crashing together [רש״י, שטיינזלץ]. This violent process will result in total separation and alienation between brothers [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that the destruction describes a rapid sequence of disaster, where the people will fall one after another in close succession [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון]. Regardless of the method, the devastation will spare no one. Fathers and sons will fall right beside each other [רש״י], a tragedy that will tear apart the strongest and most intimate bonds of family [מלבי״ם].

To finalize the decree, God declares His refusal to show any pity, grace, or mercy. While this repetition is understood by some to simply emphasize the absolute lack of compassion [מצודת ציון], [מלבי״ם] identifies a precise meaning behind each concept, explaining why God rejects every possible reason to save the nation. First, basic mercy, which is normally extended to people simply because they are human, will not be awakened. Second, God will not spare them out of any sense of usefulness, because the nation no longer serves any practical purpose. Finally, God will not pity them based on any inherent goodness, because they have lost their inner value and are now considered completely worthless.
