ירמיהו, פרק כ״ט, פסוק י״ב

Jeremiah 29:12Sefaria

True spiritual restoration begins with inner humility and sincere repentance. Once this internal shift occurs, a renewed bond is formed with God, allowing prayer to become the primary bridge that draws a Divine response [מצודת דוד]. In this renewed relationship, the people are urged to call upon God in a deeply personal way. Rather than simply directing their prayers toward Him from afar, they are asking God to actively come and rest His presence directly among them. This intimate invitation is especially vital during times of exile. Far from Jerusalem and unable to offer physical sacrifices, the people learn that their sincere prayers now stand completely in the place of those offerings [מלבי״ם].

This spiritual awakening is accompanied by a call to action, which is understood in two distinct ways. The primary approach views this action as a moral and spiritual journey, reflecting a commitment to walk faithfully in the ways of God [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, this action is seen as a physical journey. The people are encouraged to walk to their synagogues, which serve as miniature sanctuaries for them while they live in exile [מלבי״ם].

Whether by walking in God's ways or gathering in these local sanctuaries, the people will lift their voices in prayer. Their ultimate goal is to plead for the safe return of all the exiles from the scattered places where they have been dispersed. In response to this profound process of personal change and heartfelt prayer, God promises that He will willingly accept their pleas and listen to them [מצודת דוד].
