The severe actions of the false prophets ultimately resulted in a terrible punishment of being burned [חומת אנך]. Their behavior went beyond ordinary wrongdoing, involving exceptionally ugly and disgraceful acts [מצודת ציון]. These individuals committed two deeply intertwined offenses: adultery and false prophecy.

Their adultery was not merely a betrayal of their friends, but a cynical exploitation of their spiritual status. They approached the wives of their peers and falsely claimed that God Himself had commanded the women to sleep with them [רש"י, חומת אנך]. This manipulation directly links their physical sins to their second major crime of speaking falsely in His name. Their deception encompassed both the fabricated divine permission for their affairs and other unauthorized messages they delivered to the people [חומת אנך, מצודת דוד].

In response to these acts, God declares that He is both the one who knows and the ultimate witness. These two divine roles correspond directly to the prophets' crimes. God knows the absolute truth that their public prophecies are completely fabricated, and He serves as the unseen witness to the acts of adultery they committed in secret [רד"ק, מלבי"ם, מצודת דוד].
