ירמיהו, פרק ג׳, פסוק כ׳

Jeremiah 3:20Sefaria

A deep contrast exists between God's expectations and the actual behavior of the Israelites. God anticipated a relationship characterized by the loyalty of a devoted daughter toward a generous father. Instead, the people acted like an unfaithful wife betraying her husband [מלבי״ם]. This painful shift expresses a deep sense of divine disappointment. It highlights either a sorrowful contrast, showing God's sadness that the Israelites did not follow His will [רש״י], or it serves to emphasize the harsh, undeniable truth of their actions [מצודת דוד].

The imagery of a wife who rebels and abandons her partner illustrates the gravity of their choices [מצודת ציון]. The commentators agree that abandoning the service of God is compared directly to the severe pain of betraying a beloved companion and tearing apart a family [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific phrasing used to describe this infidelity reveals deeper layers of meaning. Rather than describing the betrayal merely as an offense committed against a partner, the language describes a departure away from the companion. This subtle distinction leads to two complementary explanations. First, it emphasizes the physical and emotional act of distancing. Just as an unfaithful wife walks away from her husband to join another, the Israelites actively distanced themselves from God [רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Second, this phrasing points to the false excuse used to justify the infidelity. A wife might leave her husband if he is incapable of providing for her daily needs. The Israelites rebelled against God as if He had failed to sustain them, acting entirely blind to the reality that He is the true and constant provider of all their blessings [רש״י, מלבי״ם].
