Jeremiah 3:24Sefaria

A painful confession emerges from the people as they face the destructive consequences of their actions, realizing how wrong choices can erase the hard work of entire generations. The root of this devastation is identified as a deep source of shame. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to idol worship, specifically the worship of Baal. Idolatry earns this title because, ultimately, it brings nothing but disgrace and humiliation to those who practice it Conversely, another perspective views this shame through a psychological and social lens. In this view, the destructive force is a negative sense of embarrassment that stops a person from doing what is right. This manifests when someone fears the mockery of society and therefore avoids rebuking sinners or neglects serving God. It also applies to a person who has sinned but is too embarrassed to repent, afraid that their peers will laugh at them [חומת אנך].

Whether rooted in idol worship or social pressures, this shame brings total ruin and annihilation [מצודת ציון]. It consumes the wealth and property that past generations gathered with great effort and difficulty This punishment took a physical form, appearing as the loss of crops through blight, locust swarms, or the plunder of invading enemies [רד״ק].

The people recognize that this ruin is not an isolated event but a continuous process. From their youth, they have watched their wealth disappear as a direct result of their wrongdoings The tragedy, however, extends far beyond material loss. The consequences of their actions consumed not only their flocks and herds but also their own families. In a final, devastating blow, their children died in plagues as a punishment for these ongoing sins [רד״ק, אברבנאל].
