ירמיהו, פרק ג׳, פסוק ט״ז

Jeremiah 3:16Sefaria

In the future era of the Messiah, the spiritual focus of the nation will undergo a profound transformation. Sacred symbols and objects, even the most revered among them, will give way to a deep, internal awareness and a holiness that encompasses the entire people. As the nation prospers, grows, and has many children, the physical Ark of the Covenant will no longer be the center of their attention.

The primary approach among commentators is that the absence of the Ark does not suggest a loss, but rather a remarkable spiritual elevation. The entire nation will achieve such a state of holiness that God will dwell among them as though they themselves are the Ark [רש״י]. The entirety of Jerusalem will be elevated to the Ark's level of sanctity. Consequently, there will be no need to rely on a physical object to instill a fear of sin or to serve as a superficial guarantee of safety. True devotion to God will flow naturally from internal faith and proper actions rather than an attachment to sacred items [אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a more practical level, another perspective suggests that the sheer size of the growing population will make it physically impossible for the masses to gather and pray in front of a single object [מצודת דוד].

This shift involves a complete detachment from past reliance on the Ark, affecting how people think, remember, and act. Historically, the Ark was carried out to the battlefield during times of conflict. However, in the future, an era of lasting peace will prevail. Other nations will no longer envy the prosperity of the Israelites, and war will cease to exist, completely removing the thought or need to use the Ark for military victory [רש״י, רד״ק]. Similarly, while the Ark once served as the central focal point for taking oaths or offering prayers during crises like droughts and plagues, the future will bring a universal awareness of God. His providence will be felt everywhere, eliminating the need to travel specifically to the Ark to present these pleas [אברבנאל].

This future reality also brings a deep psychological healing, repairing the common disconnect between human intention and action. Currently, people might speak of holy matters without truly feeling them in their hearts, or they might harbor good thoughts that never translate into actual deeds. In the future, speech, thought, and action will be perfectly unified. Empty lip service and unfulfilled intentions will disappear completely [מלבי״ם].

Ultimately, this era marks an end to old practices. The Ark will never again be taken into battle [רש״י, רד״ק], nor will there be a need to build additional arks to accommodate crowds, because the presence of God will rest over all of Jerusalem, making every part of the city a place where prayers are accepted [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, there will be no need to forge a new covenant, and shameful actions will cease entirely, as the desire to do evil will be completely eradicated and pure holiness will fill the earth [אברבנאל].
