The exiled King of Judah experiences a sudden and dramatic shift in his fate within the royal court of Babylon. After enduring captivity, he is unexpectedly lifted from his lowly state and granted personal, elevated treatment by the Babylonian king. Yet, the underlying reason for this sudden favor remains a complete mystery [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The Babylonian ruler goes far beyond merely improving the physical living conditions of the exiled king. He actively comforts and reassures him with kind words [מצודת דוד]. This new relationship is marked by genuine respect and affection, as the Babylonian monarch chooses to speak with him privately, face to face [חומת אנך].

As a public display of this newfound honor, the exiled king is given a seat of prominence. His throne is placed in a higher, more distinguished position than those of the other captive rulers held in Babylon [מצודת דוד]. These other monarchs are the defeated leaders of various nations previously conquered by Nebuchadnezzar. While they too remain confined in the Babylonian prison system, none of them receive the exceptional treatment and elevated status granted to the King of Judah [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
