Job 15:6Sefaria

יַרְשִׁיעֲךָ֣ פִ֣יךָ וְלֹא־אָ֑נִי וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ יַעֲנוּ־בָֽךְ׃

In the heat of a bitter argument, there comes a point where an accuser no longer needs to build a case, as the opponent's own words do all the necessary damage. The speaker steps back, realizing that the most powerful proof of a person's flaws is simply what they choose to say, making any outside criticism completely unnecessary.

The primary approach among commentators focuses on this idea of self-incrimination. In the dynamics of a debate, the strategy is often to ask questions that cause a person to trip over their own answers. It is far more effective for someone to convict themselves through their responses than for an opponent to point out their guilt [רש"י]. The very act of speaking out in defiance is what seals a person's fate [מלבי"ם]. The words themselves act as active witnesses, giving testimony against the speaker just like a witness in a courtroom [מצודת ציון, מלבי"ם].

There is a deep difference between the core thoughts a person tries to express and the crafted language they use to say them. A person's inner logic drives the speech, but the outer, poetic, and crafty language dresses up those thoughts. Ultimately, it is this very attempt at beautiful, clever speech that turns into the strongest witness against the one speaking [מלבי"ם].

On a deeper psychological and spiritual level, this process reveals a steady downward spiral where one wrong step leads to another. Inner badness slowly trains a person to speak poorly against God. At first, someone might try to hide their true thoughts, using smooth and careful words. Over time, however, they lose their fear of God and reach a point where they simply cannot hold back or stay quiet. Even if they desperately try to keep their true intentions hidden, their own words will slip out unexpectedly, unintentionally revealing the deepest secrets of their heart [אלשיך].
