Material success can sometimes twist human pride into a dangerous, direct confrontation with the Creator. The primary approach among commentators is that the wicked person makes a physical gesture of pure provocation and disrespect, showing a readiness to fight God. He arrogantly waves his hand upward in a dismissive motion, much like a person waving off a friend with contempt [מצודת דוד, תקות אנוש]. This extreme audacity is fueled by immense wealth and success. Blinded by his achievements, the wicked individual convinces himself that his own strength and power produced his fortune, causing him to completely lose any fear of divine punishment [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן, תקות אנוש].

The rebellion then escalates further as the wicked person begins to boast and speak aggressively, actively trying to struggle against God. This escalating conflict targets distinct aspects of God's relationship with the world. According to one perspective, the confrontation is aimed at God's active guidance and providence over the universe. The wicked person works hard to completely deny this divine involvement, making his aggressive boasting a much fiercer resistance than his initial dismissive hand gesture [מלבי״ם].

Alternatively, the conflict represents a reaction to different types of divine treatment. One aspect of God's interaction with humanity symbolizes kindness and material abundance, while another represents strict justice and suffering. The wicked person gladly reaches out his hand to God when receiving kindness and prosperity. However, when God brings hardship and suffering, the wicked person refuses to accept it with humility, choosing instead to aggressively rebel [אלשיך].
