איוב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ל״א

Job 15:31Sefaria

אַל־יַאֲמֵ֣ן בַּשָּׁ֣ו נִתְעָ֑ה כִּי־שָׁ֝֗וְא תִּהְיֶ֥ה תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃

A life built on falsehood inevitably leads to a hollow reality. A person who chooses a path of deceit often becomes captivated by the illusions of worldly success, mistaking temporary fortune for lasting stability. The primary approach among commentators is a warning to the wicked who are led astray by the vanities of the world [רלב״ג]. They are cautioned not to place their trust in fleeting peace or false achievements. Such a person should never assume their prosperity will endure indefinitely, because a foundation of lies can only produce more lies [רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, time will strip away their wealth and honor, replacing them with absolute nothingness. The consequence they receive will be just as empty as the actions they pursued [מצודת דוד, רמב״ן].

Beyond the external loss of wealth, this emptiness permeates the lived experience of the individual. Psychologically, the wicked cannot even fully enjoy their apparent success, living in constant dread that their fortune will suddenly evaporate [מלבי״ם]. This dramatic shift in reality can also take a physical toll, where robust health is abruptly exchanged for illness and suffering [מלבי״ם].

Taking a different perspective, the focus shifts to those who deny divine providence. Lost in their own flawed reasoning, the wicked refuse to accept the justice of God. They simply do not believe that He judges the world fairly, nor do they accept that they will eventually face a consequence that perfectly mirrors their deeds [תקות אנוש].

Another distinct approach examines intellectual arrogance and its devastating impact on future generations. This view warns against the kind of pride that leads to heresy and false beliefs through twisted logic. In this context, the ultimate loss is a person's continuity in the world, specifically their children. The tragic result of such profound intellectual deception is that a child may perish for the father's sins, rendering the individual's legacy completely void [אלשיך].
