איוב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק י״ט

Job 15:19Sefaria

לָהֶ֣ם לְ֭בַדָּם נִתְּנָ֣ה הָאָ֑רֶץ וְלֹא־עָ֖בַר זָ֣ר בְּתוֹכָֽם׃

The traditions of past generations and the broader scope of human history provide a firm anchor of truth. This historical foundation shapes the understanding of how the world is governed, the reality of free will, and the exclusive right to an inheritance.

The primary approach among commentators focuses on the immense power and authority of ancient, wise leaders. The world was entrusted entirely to these exceptional individuals, who governed through their profound wisdom. Their leadership was so secure that no outsider could challenge their authority or claim a share of their domain. Because these leaders were deeply honest and insightful, they would never pass down lies to their children. Consequently, the traditions they handed down established an absolute, undeniable truth [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד].

Taking a more philosophical direction, the concept of an exclusive domain can be understood not as a physical territory, but as the material world and human action. In this light, the focus shifts to the reality of free will. The physical world was handed over to humanity so people could operate freely within it. The absence of any outside interference means there is no external force that dictates human behavior or overrides personal choice [מלבי״ם].

Other perspectives focus on the righteous founders of the nation. The world rightfully belongs only to these righteous forefathers, and any others who happen to possess it hold no true significance [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. More specifically, this inheritance refers to the Land of Israel, which was promised exclusively to the descendants of Abraham. This specific grant naturally excluded outsiders, such as Esau and Ishmael, who were not part of the original promise [אלשיך].

From an internal historical perspective, this secure inheritance is tied to the tribes of Judah and Reuben. Because these leaders openly admitted their past wrongs, they earned a permanent inheritance and were never driven from it. The blessing they received applied solely to them, free from any outside interference, which also hints at how the land will be divided in the future [רש״י].
