איוב, פרק ל״ד, פסוק כ״א

Job 34:21Sefaria

כִּֽי־עֵ֭ינָיו עַל־דַּרְכֵי־אִ֑ישׁ וְֽכׇל־צְעָדָ֥יו יִרְאֶֽה׃

God maintains absolute and comprehensive watchfulness over all people, leaving no opportunity to hide actions or intentions. His vision examines all of humanity with complete equality, observing every individual regardless of whether they are rich or poor [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד].

This Divine observation operates on multiple levels. One approach suggests a distinction between the internal and the external. God sees a person's inner world, including the nature of their soul, their thoughts, and their character traits, just as clearly as He watches their practical, physical actions [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective views this as a balance between the general and the specific. God watches a person's overall direction in life, while also focusing on the smallest details, carefully examining every individual choice along the way [אלשיך].

Understanding this exact and detailed watchfulness explains why punishment for the wicked is sometimes delayed. Human beings often rush to punish those who rebel against them, driven by a lack of knowledge or the fear that the wrongdoer might escape. God, however, has no need to hurry. Because His eyes are fixed on every movement, there is no chance that a sinner can slip away or hide from Him [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

The system of justice is absolute. Neither death nor darkness can prevent a person from being held accountable for their actions [תקות אנוש]. Because God already sees everything, when the time for judgment finally arrives, He can bring ruin upon the wicked swiftly, without needing any new reason or justification to act [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, people must stop questioning God's methods and realize that it is entirely useless to try to take Him to court [אבן עזרא].
