Harsh and bitter mockery does not happen in a vacuum. Rather, it is the result of negative social influence and the adoption of corrupt ways of thinking. The accusation leveled against Job is that his severe words do not stem from a simple desire to speak poorly. Instead, they show that he has associated with negative individuals, absorbing their influence until his speech mirrored theirs [אלשיך].

Job is accused of deliberately walking a specific path [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם] with the goal of joining and becoming part of a group of evildoers [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. There are different ways to understand the full extent of this accusation. One approach views the claim that he walks with wicked men as a poetic repetition, echoing the initial idea of joining evildoers to emphasize the point [מצודת דוד]. Another perspective sees a gradual process of moral decline. In this view, the first stage is merely forming social connections with wicked individuals. Only afterward comes the second stage, which involves actively walking alongside them to commit actual wrongdoings [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, it is this shared journey that causes a person to absorb and adopt the harmful traits of those who do evil [אלשיך].
