A powerful defense of absolute Divine justice stands as a direct response to the cynical claim that living a good life offers no real benefit or protection from harm. Such a view inherently accuses the Creator of acting unfairly and perverting justice [מלבי״ם, תקות אנוש]. To counter this dangerous idea, a strong call is made to those capable of truly understanding the nature of God's rule over the world.
This call is directed toward wise individuals who can weigh arguments with simple common sense [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן]. On a deeper level, this appeal speaks directly to the righteous who have mastered both their good and evil impulses and serve God constantly. The message is specifically aimed at them because the wicked, who are entirely driven by their base desires, are completely closed off to hearing or accepting any logical defense of God's justice [אלשיך].
To even suggest that God could act unfairly is considered entirely disgraceful and unacceptable [מצודת ציון]. The defense of His justice is carefully structured around two different aspects of His divine nature. First, representing absolute power and firmness, God would never use His immense strength to cause harm, to deny a proper reward to those who do His will, or to abandon humanity to blind, random chance [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, רמב״ן].
Second, representing personal care and the strict execution of law, God would never pervert justice by rewarding the wicked while punishing the righteous [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, God created the universe with the clear and specific purpose of guiding and watching over it. Therefore, it is simply impossible that He would act against the very principles of fairness and justice that He Himself established [תקות אנוש].
