Divine justice is never arbitrary. Rather than a system of random chance, human destiny is an exact reflection of a person's choices, actions, and character. Every deed a person performs naturally gives birth to its appropriate consequence. The primary approach among commentators is that God repays individuals for their actions measure for measure, with absolute precision and weight [רמב״ן, מצודת דוד]. What might appear to a person as blind luck is actually intentional providence. God prepares and arranges specific events and situations that perfectly match the path a person has chosen to walk [רמב״ן].

A deeper perspective suggests that God does not directly issue rewards and punishments. Instead, the action itself carries out the judgment. Every human action creates a spiritual force in the world. A good deed generates a positive, beneficial force, while a sin creates a destructive one. Ultimately, it is the person's own wrongdoing that prepares the natural circumstances through which hardship eventually reaches them [אלשיך]. This principle of exact repayment is illustrated by a tradition regarding Job's own suffering. His specific hardships came upon him in the exact same manner that he once advised Pharaoh to enslave the Israelites and take their wealth [חומת אנך].

Alongside this strict accounting for every deed, there is a deep consideration for human nature. God does not judge humanity by unreachable, heavenly standards. Instead, He evaluates people based on human realities, fully considering their physical weaknesses and natural desires. Judgment is highly personalized, distinguishing between the external action and the inner character of the individual. God examines the specific emotional trait that drove an action and takes it into account. For example, someone who is born with a naturally angry disposition will be judged differently for a sudden outburst than someone who does not naturally struggle with anger [מלבי״ם].
