איוב, פרק ל״ד, פסוק י״ג

Job 34:13Sefaria

מִֽי־פָקַ֣ד עָלָ֣יו אָ֑רְצָה וּמִ֥י שָׂ֝֗ם תֵּבֵ֥ל כֻּלָּֽהּ׃

The absolute sovereignty of the Creator and its moral consequences lie at the heart of understanding divine justice. Because God possesses infinite power, the possibility of Him committing an injustice or acting wickedly is entirely eliminated. The primary approach among commentators explores this through a rhetorical question regarding authority. No one commanded God to bring the earth into existence [מצודת ציון], and no higher power rules over Him to demand accountability. Instead, God acted completely alone. Out of His own free will, He created the world and organized all its systems with perfect wisdom [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד].

A clear moral conclusion about divine providence follows from this reality. Since God is the ultimate source of everything and answers to no overseeing power, it is unthinkable that He would look for false excuses to harass His creatures or harm them without reason. The Creator did not form the world for nothing or with malicious intent. As the supreme judge of the earth, it is impossible for Him to distort justice or act wickedly [רש״י, רמב״ן, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

In contrast to this broad philosophical approach, a unique perspective connects these concepts directly to the personal suffering of Job. From this viewpoint, the focus shifts to the descent of the Satan to the earth to cause harm. The underlying question becomes who commanded the Satan to go down to the earth, and the answer points back to the One who sustains the entire world. According to this understanding, God deliberately directed the Satan's accusations toward Job in order to divert his attention away from the Israelites. An attack on the Israelites would have led to the destruction of the entire world. Therefore, the specific harm inflicted upon Job was actually the very event that ensured the survival and salvation of the entire world [אלשיך].
