איוב, פרק ל״ד, פסוק כ״ב

Job 34:22Sefaria

אֵֽין־חֹ֭שֶׁךְ וְאֵ֣ין צַלְמָ֑וֶת לְהִסָּ֥תֶר שָׁ֝֗ם פֹּ֣עֲלֵי אָֽוֶן׃

No corner of the world is hidden from God's sight, leaving those who do wrong with no escape from justice. The primary approach among commentators is that no level of gloom or deep shadow can ever serve as a refuge for people who commit evil. Physical darkness poses no barrier to God, meaning bad actors can never conceal their actions or avoid His judgment.

This reality offers a profound lesson about how God manages the world [מלבי״ם]. For anyone trying to make sense of how the wicked are punished, it is enough to understand two basic facts: God watches over all their actions, and He always has the power to deliver punishment. Because of this, it is not a human being's place to advise God on exactly when, how, or in what manner to carry out justice. Since God is fully aware of their paths, their punishment is an absolute certainty.

Taking a deeper, more symbolic approach, the concepts of darkness and shadow can be understood as internal realities [אלשיך]. In this view, darkness represents the material world and the physical body, while the deep shadows symbolize the hidden chambers of the human heart and mind where sinful thoughts are first formed. People who do wrong often make the mistake of thinking that the murky, physical nature of this world acts as a shield. They might assume that God, in His immense holiness, would not look down upon such lowly, material places. However, even a person's deepest, most physical thoughts are completely exposed and visible before Him.
