איוב, פרק מ׳, פסוק ז׳

Job 40:7Sefaria

אֱזׇר־נָ֣א כְגֶ֣בֶר חֲלָצֶ֑יךָ אֶ֝שְׁאָלְךָ֗ וְהוֹדִיעֵֽנִי׃

The divine address to Job serves as a powerful challenge, preparing him for a profound revelation about the nature of divine providence and the existence of mighty forces in the world. God demands that Job prepare himself swiftly and brace himself with the strength of a hero. This call to readiness requires Job to stand face to face with the questions God is about to ask [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רמב״ן]. From another perspective, this demand actually reflects a physical change in Job, indicating that he has healed from his afflictions and is now healthy and strong enough to ready himself like a warrior [אלשיך].

This preparation sets the stage for God to question Job about wondrous phenomena in creation, such as massive beasts like the leviathan. Job will be expected to answer and acknowledge the truth [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Ultimately, these questions are designed to wake Job from his flawed assumption that he could fully comprehend the judgments of God. By exposing Job to the immense greatness of the Creator, he is forced to recognize the strict limits of human understanding [חומת אנך].

On a deeper philosophical level, this preparation and the ensuing questions address Job's struggle with why God allows cruel and wicked people to oppress the weak. God reveals that His glory is not found in creating only frail beings, but rather in forming mighty, powerful creatures that remain under His control. Just as God created fearsome predators in the animal kingdom while equipping the weak with the tools they need to survive, He applies a similar balance to humanity. God created strong individuals, and if they choose to abuse their power, He has provided human society with intellect, laws of justice, and divine providence to protect the vulnerable and support the orphan and the widow [מלבי״ם].
