איוב, פרק מ׳, פסוק ט׳

Job 40:9Sefaria

וְאִם־זְר֖וֹעַ כָּאֵ֥ל ׀ לָ֑ךְ וּ֝בְק֗וֹל כָּמֹ֥הוּ תַרְעֵֽם׃

A profound challenge is presented to a man who dared to question the justice of the Creator, testing the boundary between human limits and divine might. After heavily criticizing how God runs the world, Job is confronted with a striking question: does he possess the cosmic power to back up his bold claims? The image of an arm represents raw strength, while the ability to thunder with one's voice signifies a roaring, earth-shaking presence. God asks Job if he can wield such power.

The primary approach among commentators views this as a direct rebuke of Job's arrogance. Since Job felt wise and righteous enough to condemn God's judgment, he is challenged to show if he also has the divine strength required to perform such mighty deeds. The sound of thunder serves as a broad metaphor for all of God's unmatched, powerful actions [תקות אנוש]. This challenge directly addresses Job's bitter complaints about wicked people living peaceful lives. God makes it clear that managing the justice of the entire world and punishing the wicked requires a divine force capable of shaking the very foundations of creation, a level of power that Job simply does not have [אלשיך].

However, another perspective shifts the focus toward the spiritual potential of mankind. Because humans are created in the image of God, a person who reaches total spiritual perfection and never strays from His path can attain the immense power to control nature, much like Joshua did when he stopped the sun. From this angle, God is challenging Job's high opinion of himself. If Job truly believes he is completely righteous and flawless, he should possess strength like God to issue decrees over creation. He should be able to thunder with his voice just as a truly perfect and righteous person can [מצודת דוד].
